The Guia Cultural das Favelas (Cultural Guide to Favelas) is a collaborative map thatdisplays cultural practices in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. The guide was created by Observatório de Favelas do Rio de Janeiro and is a product of Solos Culturais, a project that, in 2012 and 2013, educated 120 youths from six marginal territories in cultural production and research. To access its content in open data format, click here.
During this project, 40 youths who had previously participated in Solos Culturais, returned tocontinue their research, revisiting cultural spots within the favela and producing multimedia content to update the map. A cultural production lab that articulates conceptual reflection and practical workshops, the project has led these youths to a broader understanding of technology, cultural production, and its social and political unfoldings.
Today, any cultural producer, artist, collective, venue, or initiative can add to the Guide, logging their own practices and contributing to the map. All in all, we hope to play a role in the reafirmation of the favela as an important territory of urban cultural output.
